November 29th is Black Friday. On this day, huge corporations exploit consumers by encouraging us to buy more and more. Their “special offers” trigger a sense of urgency and “exceptional opportunity” to consumers, resulting in an overconsumption of unnecessary goods.

This years Earth’s overshoot day was July 29th, meaning that by this date, we had already used up nature’s resource budget for the entire year.

Extinction Rebellion Vancouver knows that business as usual equals death. On Black Friday, we will be having a funeral procession to signify that if we continue down this path, the climate and ecological crisis will worsen, leaving us with a future of droughts, floods & starvation. We will mourn for the future of our planet, our ecosystems, and the lives lost due to climate crisis (human and non-human).

The procession will start in Art Phillips Park, 625 Burrard St at 1pm. It will then snake its way through the streets and malls of downtown Vancouver. Please wear black funeral attire and be as theatrical as possible e.g. face veils, top hats, suits etc. If you would like to bring a sign, we encourage messaging such as “business as usual = death”.

After bringing our climate grief to the city, we will be hosting a counter-consumerism fair on Georgia Street. There will be a clothing swap, repair stations, performers, etc. (Facebook event and details will be linked shortly). Although we know that individual actions are not enough and we are demanding system change, it is important for people to learn and practice these skills for the future!

We acknowledge that this action will take place on the unceded, traditional, ancestral and occupied territories of the Coast Sallish peoples: the səlil̓wətaʔɬ Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.
For those who are non-Indigenous, our presence on these lands is an ongoing act of colonization. When we acknowledge these territories, we also acknowledge our responsibility to centre and support Indigenous sovereignty in all our organizing and being.
