Two fearless activists who brought their fight for social justice to city hall, Kshama Sawant and Jean Swanson, talk about their People-Powered campaigns to galvanize cities run for too long by the mega-rich and developer-backed political parties. Kshama Sawant is an activist who brings a passion for social justice to her work on Seattle city council. Sawant successfully ran for council on a bold platform of “Fight for $15” to increase minimum wage, implement rent control and tax the super-rich to fund mass transit and education. Kshama is a member of Socialist Alternative, and has been described as the second best-known socialist in the US (after Bernie Sanders). Named “Best City Activist” by the Georgia Straight winner for her lifelong activism, 2018 COPE candidate Jean Swanson re-set the Vancouver “politics as usual” agenda by calling for a rent freeze and a mansion tax to counter the political and developer machinery at city hall. “We can make the city a truly affordable sanctuary for all and not just of the mega rich. If we use imagination, courage and persistence, and a willingness to take the first step, it is possible. We’ll never get what we want unless we ask for it.” - Jean Swanson With 2018 COPE candidates Anne Roberts, Derrick O’Keefe, Barb Parrott, Diana Day, Gwen Giesbrecht and John Irwin.
