Justice for Migrants Benefit Concert

https://www.facebook.com/events/692527987908540/

Saturday, 9 November 2019 from 19:00-00:00

1601 Johnston St, Vancouver, BC

This cultural evening benefiting migrants will be held in honour of thousands of migrants who have been put into detention facilities. These brothers and sisters have fled their lands because of economic instability (poverty), persecution at the hands of their government/gang violence and environmental degradation. Children as young as two years old have died in facilities that degrade, dehumanize and criminalize migrants for trying to liberate themselves.

We are holding a concert and cultural night to honour the 680 Mississippi workers arrested in a massive immigration raid on August 7th, 2019. Most of the money collected will go to MIRA Mississippi immigrant’s rights alliance. MIRA uses advocacy, education, legal services to expand and protect the rights of immigrants and their families in Mississippi.

Here in Vancouver B.C we will be supporting Sanctuary Health they are a grassroot community group deploying direct action, movement-building, community-engagement, and direct support strategies. Sanctuary health advocates access to services for all regardless of immigration status or documentation.

We are also honoured to support the crab park expansion and healing lodge. The vision for a healing lodge next to Crab Park has been a vision of indigenous elders, leaders and residents of Vancouver's downtown Eastside. The opportunity has now arisen and we would also like to honour their beautiful work and vision.

Presented with the support of Cushy Entertainment.

Headliner:

Kin Balam and his eight-piece band will be performing all original Indigenous Meso American, Afro Latin Jazz, Hip Hop, Flamenco music.
We will be invited to move to the sounds of the cajon, congas, trumpet, sax, bass and of course Balam’s soulful guitar.

We are so unbelievably ecstatic to have
the multitalented Breaking Boundaries with us on this special night.

We would also like to announce guest speakers who will share their education on the topic of migrant’s rights, migration policies, humane immigration reform and social justice with a focus on Latin/Indigenous issues.

Lastly renowned Salvadoran artist Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo will be presenting his magnificent works of art with us.

He is the recipient of The Artist Studio Award Program by the City of Vancouver (2015-2018), the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2010) and numerous others from The Canada Arts Council. He was shortlisted for the Pierre- Ayot Prize in 2009 for an emerging artist by the City of Montréal.
