Left Film Night - Off World

Left Film Night

Sunday, November 24, 7 pm
Centre for Socialist Education, 706 Clark Drive, Vancouver

As the Philippines struggles to recover from the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan, this haunting film provides a glimpse of life in that country. Lucky, a young Toronto man, leaves his adopted home to return to his birthplace in the Filipino slum of Smokey Mountain, named for the twelve-storey, methane-smoking mountain of garbage that is the area’s grim monument. Immersing himself in this poverty-stricken existence, Lucky discovers a brother he never knew existed, whose own life as a gay man further challenges Lucky’s struggle to reconcile his affluent Canadian identity with this world he had left behind. Toronto director Mateo Guez invited the active participation of the inhabitants of Smokey Mountain to create this ethereal, moving portrait of a makeshift community where hope, strength and endurance all stubbornly continue to exist.

At this Left Film Night, financial donations towards Philippine emergency relief will be accepted.

Left Film Nights are presented by the Centre for Socialist Education and the Vancouver East Club of the Communist Party of Canada, usually on the final Sunday of each month. Admission to films is free, donations gratefully accepted. Ph. 604-255-2041 for information.
