The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical
Film screening, panel and meet-and-greet with COPE candidates

"Brisk and evocative ... If you’ve got any interest at all in Vancouver politics, how it is today and what came before, this is a must-see film.” - Vancouver Observer

Celebrate the socialist history of Vancouver city hall with a documentary detailing the 1986 mayoral bid by outspoken radical and city councillor Harry Rankin. Chameleon, survivor, and described as “mouthy, reasonably knowledgeable and extremely left wing” by journalist Jack Webster, Rankin ran for mayor with the Coalition of Progressive Electors (COPE), along with a progressive slate of city council candidates that included a young housing activist named Jean Swanson. Original election footage was unearthed three decades later by director Teresa Alfeld to bring to a whole new generation of socialists and activists.

Thirty years later, what has changed? Housing density, homelessness, First Nations injustices and rampant capitalism have ignited another political revolution with Jean Swanson and a team united under the COPE banner to #WintheCity. With a new COPE slate and a political void in city hall, there’s an appetite for change and a shift to the left. Celebrate fifty years of COPE history with a film screening, panel discussion with 2018 COPE candidates, and meet-and-greet at the historic Rio Theatre.
