Screening of “Directly Affected” film - learn more about the 'Kinder Morgan' pipeline - Special guests Grand Chief Stewart Phillip and his partner Joan

On New Year’s eve this year, I returned to Vancouver after 4 years of living in Ontario. Within weeks of returning, I found myself deeply embedded in a historic resistance against the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

I’ve learned so much since I’ve returned to these unceded Coast Salish territories. But the most important thing is that community is the building block of this struggle. That’s why it is so important to create space for dialogue around Kinder Morgan in our own communities. Tomorrow, our friends at the Kaslo Gardens Housing Cooperative in Vancouver will be doing just that -- and I’d love for you to join in. Here are all the details:

WHAT: A screening of “Directly Affected” film to learn more about the Kinder Morgan pipeline -- featuring an address from special guest Grand Chief Stewart Phillip and his partner Joan. This will also be an opportunity to learn about co-ops and their role in the fight for climate justice.
WHEN: Tomorrow! Saturday July 21st at 6:30 pm

WHERE: 108, 2765 Cooperative Way, Vancouver, British Columbia

Last week, I was watching the “Directly Affected” film in the suburban neighbourhood where I grew up in Surrey. And as I watched I was reminded that almost a decade ago, it was concerned community members in Indigenous frontline communities who first kindled the flames of this fight by standing together. Since then, tens of thousands of people across Canada have joined in because of their love for their communities. And, today, this resistance is a convergence point for communities like the ones that have formed on the frontlines -- at the Coast Salish Watch House on Burnaby Mountain and the Tiny House Warriors camp in interior BC. We will win this fight if we continue to grow our community of resistance. That’s why events like the one tomorrow are so crucial. I invite you to join and bring a friend who’s still learning about the Kinder Morgan fight.

This week we saw the frontlines of this fight heat up in Interior BC when with the unjust police crackdown of the Secwepemc women warriors who are building Tiny Houses in the way of Kinder Morgan. It was a solemn reminder that we have a long road ahead but until the next big moment, let’s continue to strengthen our relationships and our resolve. Join Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, his partner Joan, and our friends at the Kaslo Gardens Housing Cooperative tomorrow for a screening of "Directly Affected" and a dialogue on the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

Onwards,
Atiya [350.org]
