Stand Up to Racist Yellow Vests at Vancouver City Hall!

 

Last weekend, a Metro Vancouver contingent of Canada's "Yellow Vests" showed up in Burnaby to support the National Citizen's Alliance, a far-right fringe party. Luckily, their group was opposed by some folks in-the-know, and the party's would-be candidate, Zachary Johnson, was shut down and embarrassed.

The NCA is a white nationalist political party that gives special recognition to "Euro-Canadians" on its platform, and has drawn controversy for publishing videos claiming that Rohingya Muslims are "not people". The NCA has made ties with Yellow Vests groups all over Canada, and their political agendas are as one.

This Saturday, these "patriots" are rallying at Vancouver City Hall to spread a message of hatred against Muslims, to support closed borders and the abuse of indigenous rights via expanded pipeline projects, and to support the xenophobia and racism of the NCA and Maxime Bernier's "People's Party".

History shows us that when fascists and racists are able to rally unopposed, they appear as legitimate, and are able to build dangerous and violent movements. We know that we can't let that happen, and so we are calling on anyone who opposes racism on unceded, Coast Salish territory to join us in standing up to the Yellow Vests' hateful politics!

A NOTE ON SAFETY:

Because any physical conflict or escalation can tend to endanger vulnerable people and make targets out of racialized folks, we hope that those on the side of anti-racism would prefer a peaceful event. For everyone's safety, we think that it's wise to avoid getting drawn into arguments with anyone from the other side. It's not a useful exercise to take the bait. Furthermore, buddy up: don't arrive or leave alone, stay tight with the group, and hold the line. Our strength is in numbers.

Anti-racist work belongs to everyone, and the "hosts" of this event do not claim ownership over the movement. It is only our intention to use this event page to publicize the counter-organizing effort against the Yellow Vests and their associated politics.
