The Youth Council confront Trudeau on three points;
An oil spill would cause irreversible damage to the Salish Sea. "No amount of technology can undo a spill in the Salish Sea, and a spill would crush the cultures and livelihoods that depend on the health of the Sea."
Pipeline expansion in a warming world is illogical and makes it impossible for Canada to reach climate targets made in Paris. And, "Buying the Trans Mountain pipeline project undermines the Paris Agreement and locks Canada into decades of reliance on fossil fuel."
Buying and building pipelines violates Indigenous rights and that "Forcing this pipeline through the lands of First Nations that do no consent entrenches the violence of colonialism and moves us away from reconciliation."
By encouraging the Trudeau to listen to the voice of reason, the PMYC effectively dismantle pro-pipeline rhetoric - arguing that risks are too high. Real climate leaders do not build pipelines, and federal holdings in Kinder Morgan are not in the national interest.
The Youth Council letter tells the Trudeau government that as long as he holds office, he is accountable to the promises that got him elected in the first place.
If he wants to go ahead and bet it all on diluted bitumen and toxic tanker projects, we´re here to tell him that we aren't buying it.
