Banks Off Campus Day of Action!

Information from Decolonial Solidarity Network

  • The Canadian government is trying to sell us on LNG expansion that even proponents say is overhyped. Call your MP to ask them to raise this concern in caucus!

  • If you are a student, join the national student day of action!

  • People of faith across Toronto and the GTHA, join an interfaith vigil on Nov 10th

Even Shell isn’t sure Canadian LNG is a money maker, but Carney still wants to invest your money!

In a September 30th article for Barron’s magazine, Shell CEO Wael Sawan called the amount of investment in LNG in the last several months “not fully rational”. According to Sawan, the amount of supply that is being built just isn’t matched by the need, and that may cause prices to crash.

Decolonial Solidarity folks like you are not usually interested in what CEOs like Sawan have to say, or worried about whether fossil fuel companies lose profits, but we have to ask, why is Carney trying to sell us on LNG when even its proponents aren’t convinced? Sawan isn’t alone in his prediction, with the International Institute for Sustainable Development, Investors for Paris Compliance and the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, all coming out with similar findings: there is just too much LNG export infrastructure being built, and not enough demand.

Despite the irrationality, Carney and Eby continue to push LNG, with all signs pointing towards major public finance commitments in the near future. As the authors of the Investors for Paris Compliance report write: “because Canadian LNG projects cannot compete on cost, they resort to federal and provincial subsidies to make them viable.”

That’s right, fossil fuel giants like Shell and shady companies like Texas-based Western LNG would have to rely on financial support from YOU to turn a profit.

And when these projects fail, and threaten the lands and the waters of Indigenous Nations who have not given consent, they will be doing so on your dime. Carney is going to make you complicit in this destructive and wasteful colonial exercise, all while telling you there isn’t money for basic public services.

The one plus side of this dire situation is that it’s your representatives who have a say. Now is the moment to contact your representatives and let them know you want them to spend your money on Indigenous-led climate solutions, and robust public services, and NOT to throw it away trying to prop up the failing fossil fuel industry. Check out the Decolonial Action of the Month section below for some talking points that you can bring up with your MP.

Still time to join the Banks Off Campus Day of Action!
