Beyond Sinophobia and Anti-Asian Racism in Canada-China Relations

The deterioration in Canada-China relations in the past few years has seen an escalation in attacks on those who dissent from the growing trend to demonize China. This is not the first time this has happened. In the 1960s, Professor Paul Lin faced systemic harassment when he advocated for the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Canada. This on-line webinar will explore anti-Asian racism & the many dimensions of Canada-China relations, past and present.

SPEAKERS:
Honourable Yuen Pau Woo was appointed to the Senate of Canada in November 2016, and sits as an independent representing British Columbia. He has been the Facilitator of the Independent Senators Group since 2017.

Xiaobei Chen 陈小蓓is Professor of Sociology & Associate Chair in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Carleton University. She is Past-President of the Canadian Sociological Association (2021-2022). Her research and teaching interests include: sociology of childhood and youth, governance and power, citizenship, racism, colonialism, citizenship, Asian diasporas especially the Chinese diaspora, and Buddhist social thought. Her current research & community engagement are focused on anti-Asian racism and Sinophobia.

Timothy J. Stanley is professor emeritus of anti-racism education and education foundations in the Faculty of Education of the University of Ottawa where is also the former Interim Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. A historian of anti-Chinese racism in Canada, in 1976-78 he lived in Beijing as a Canada-People’s Republic of China Exchange Scholar.
