Black Lives Matter Vancouver is inviting Black and Indigenous people to an Emancipation Day celebration on the unceded, traditional ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Date: Saturday August 1st, 2020
Time: 12pm-5pm
Location: Emery Barnes Park

August 1st 1834 was the day that slavery was abolished within the British Empire, after the Slavery Abolition Act was passed in 1833. While this day demarcates our freedom from bondage, the British Empire did not stop their aggressive colonization of "Canada", and this country continues the legacy of colonization and genocide of First Nations, Inuit and Metis. We invite our Indigenous friends to celebrate with us in solidarity, and strengthen the relationships that will in turn end this violent oppression. This means that we have prepared a DOPE line-up of BIPOC artists and community.

****Registration is required to attend this event. Black and Indigenous folks will need to create their own pods, but it’s up to you to invite whomever to the cookout! We are also taking the following precautions:

•Volunteers that can assist at drop off points with accessibility or mobility considerations
•Live streaming for participants at home
•Wellness assessment for social interactivity comfort-level wristbands
•Ample provisions of gloves, hand sanitizer and extra face masks

This event is free, and we have arranged for lunch to be delivered for all attendees at 2pm. We encourage Zero-waste and promote the use of reusable items. That being said, please BRING:
