Join UNITE HERE’s Black Leadership Group special livestream event

August 6 marks the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, which established the right to vote for all Americans while prohibiting racial discrimination in the voting process. Fifty-five years later, while Black people and people of color have made significant political and economic gains through organizing and electoral participation, racist and conservative forces continue to find ways to suppress the vote, such as through state legislatures.

On Thursday, August 6, join UNITE HERE’s Black Leadership Group for our special event program “LIFT EVERY VOICE” to commemorate the anniversary amid a historic moment of unprecedented crises facing our country.

In June, a rebellion ignited across the U.S. denouncing anti-Black racism and police violence and brutality. Millions of working class people stand in the middle of an unemployment and healthcare crisis as COVID-19 ravages predominantly Black and brown populations. $800 billion dollars and distribution of services to Black and brown communities are at stake as the deadline for the 2020 Census approaches. Through this storm, our Union, made of mainly Black, brown, and immigrant communities, continues to moves with determination to uplift and protect workers in a middle of a pandemic, to fight racism, and galvanize our members to assert our power in not only the 2020 presidential election but key state and local races in Florida, Nevada, and Arizona.

RSVP to join our livestream on August 6 to learn more about all the ways we are responding to this historic moment of opportunity for hospitality workers and beyond to take on the stronghold of capitalism.

The Black Leadership Group is dedicating this event to the memory of John Lewis and CT Vivian, pioneers in the movement for Black voting rights and civil rights. This event will serve as a moment of political education, reflection, and a call to action as we approach 90 days from an historic election. You don’t want to miss this event; RSVP now!
