Join us to mourn the victims of climate disasters

#Candles4Climate on Dec. 13

To say it’s been a hard year in British Columbia doesn’t even begin to describe the loss. Four people died in the recent mudslides. Another two passed away in the tragic fire in Lytton. And this summer’s heatwave, the nation’s deadliest climate disaster to date, killed 595 people in this province. That’s not to mention the thousands who have died from drugs poisoned with fentanyl and the COVID-19 virus this year.

I hope you and your family have been safe at this challenging time.

With the province lurching from crisis to crisis, many of us felt the need for a space to process this grief. Let's come together to hold a series of candlelit events outside MLAs offices next Monday.

It’s also our hope to demand better from our provincial government in keeping us safe from these climate disasters. That means delivering a climate plan that reflects the urgency of this moment. There can be no half measures when people’s lives are at stake.

Will you join us Dec. 13 at 5 p.m. outside Minister of Environment and Climate Change George Heyman’s office? Bring your soy, beeswax or LED candle or even the light off your cell phone and we’ll share some stories from the frontlines of the climate crisis.

Similar events will take place across the province outside other MLA offices at the same time. You can also find or host another candlelit event in your community! Together, we’ll mourn the victims of the climate crisis and stress the need for emergency action to address it.

Hope to see you there,

P.S. If you can’t make it, please join us in lighting a candle each Monday night in your window and posting a photo using the hashtag #Candles4Climate. Don’t forget to tag your MLA!
