New Westminster
It came as no surprise when the Trudeau Federal government announced on February 18 that the Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) pipeline cost jumped from an estimate of $12.6 billion to the outrageous price tag of $21.4 billion. This is a 70% increase in the estimated costs for this environmentally disastrous pipeline – a spending that will continue to fall on the shoulders of people in Canada. We need money for healthcare, education, housing, and social justice not climate destroying pipelines.
Ironically Trans Mountain Corp., the government of Canada entity that owns the pipeline, blamed delays caused by the B.C. floods, wildfires, and the pandemic – all brought on by climate change - as reasons for the cost increase. Yet, the Trudeau government continues to disregard both public health and the health of the planet to push for the TMX Tar Sands pipeline construction through BC and Alberta.
While the BC NDP government is pushing ahead for the reckless construction of the Coastal GasLink (CGL) pipeline, Wet’suwet’en land defenders and allies continue to face violence and persecution as they defend their traditional territories.
The construction of these two pipelines is disastrous for our increasingly fragile climate and violates the very Indigenous rights the provincial and federal governments have promised to uphold.
Together We Can STOP the TMX and CGL Pipelines!
Join Climate Convergence for a Banner Drop demanding “STOP TMX & CGL PIPELINES!” as we continue to fight for climate justice.
Bring your friends. Bring a mask. Wear warm clothes!
