Rally at B.C. Provincial Court in Vancouver before hearing on lawsuit to call on the B.C. government for strong climate action and to fulfil its legal obligations

Message from the Sierra Club:

On October 4, we're headed to court with Ecojustice to call on the B.C. government for strong climate action and to fulfil its legal obligations.

Back in March, we announced that we were taking the B.C. government to court for failing to present plans to meet key climate targets, as required by its own climate accountability legislation. As people from all over the world are feeling the impacts of the climate crisis—from record-breaking heatwaves to severe floods and landslides—we need bold climate action now. That includes action for every sector of the economy, including oil and gas, and every climate target on the path to 2050.

In filing this lawsuit, we are seeking for the province to put forward a clear pathway to a safer future for all of us. It is not too late for the B.C. government to step up as the climate leader it promised to be.

As we launch this important climate case, can you join us at the courthouse? This will be a gathering of hope and solidarity to start the hearing on the right foot! There will be music, speakers from Sierra Club BC, Ecojustice, Sustainabiliteens and more!

Here are the details for the gathering:

When: October 4 from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.

Where: The steps of B.C. Provincial Court (at the corner of Hornby and Nelson Street) in Vancouver (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territory). You can find the directions here.

If you’re unable to join in person but would still like to support the hearing, you could help amplify the climate case on social media, send a letter to your MLA or invite people in your network to join the October 4 gathering. We really appreciate all your well wishes and solidarity!

Together, we can help build a healthy climate for future generations. I hope to see you out there on October 4, whether in person or in spirit!

In solidarity,
