Housing, COVID, and Cops!!!
Three of today's many interwoven strands of erupting crisis, caused and worsened by capitalism!

Hosted by the Socialist Unity Assembly including the Democratic Socialists of Vancouver, Socialist Action, the Vancouver Ecosocialist Group, and independent activists.
A panel of speakers on three current crises caused by capitalism and made worse by capitalism:
HOUSING AND HOMELESSNESS
Speaker: Karina Castro, a member of Red Braid Alliance for Decolonial Socialism, has been involved in organizing at the Kennedy-Trudeau Tent City (named after Vancouver’s mayor and Canada’s PM). Located in East Vancouver, it is also known as Strathcona Park Tent City. Karina is active with the Our Homes Can’t Wait coalition and will be speaking about the struggle for housing justice from the streets into housing—analyzing actions by all three levels of government to sweep the growing number of unhoused people into outdoor shelters—and about the struggle to stop all evictions and create universal housing for all.

COVID AND CAPITALIST PROFITEERING
Speaker: Robbie Mahood, a lifelong socialist who grew up in Saskatchewan and witnessed the 1962 battle for medicare. He is a semi-retired family doctor working in Montreal and a member of Ligue pour l'action socialiste.
.
DEFUND THE POLICE
Speaker: Taz Khandwani, an activist and an organizer, carrying out most of his work on the Unceded and Ancestral Lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Taz has had the privilege of working with some radical organizers in so called Vancouver, and it is thanks to these relationships, and those knowledge bearers, that Taz has anything to offer. Taz believes that it is imperative for socialists and anti-capitalists to recognize that true liberation on Turtle Island relies on understanding what it means to work in Solidarity with Indigenous communities struggling against settler colonialism, and Land Back. While in our shared struggle against capitalism, Taz believes that it is important we frame carceral institutions as the appendages of the colonial state that they are, and that coercive and oppressive policies that rule these institutions, exist to protect property, state and capitalist interests. Hence, socialists must work towards abolition of the carceral state.

This event is being organized on the Unceded and Ancestral Lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations
