November 26, 2020 Farmers from across India launched their strike against the Modi government; against the three anti farmer laws. These laws were pushed through in September 2020 with no consultation, through a contentious voice vote and in the midst of the COVID pandemic. The three bills aim to deregulate farming. In the long term this will open the industry to exploitation by large corporations.

A breakdown of the three bills:

1. The 1st and 2nd bill will abolish Mandis, a marketplace system where farmers have sold their produce for 60+ years and where farmers are guaranteed the MSP (minimum support price). Without MSP, small farmers are left with no bargaining leverage and where they will likely receive outrageously low prices from large corporations

2. The 3rd bill will make it legal for companies to hoard agricultural products after they purchase them. This will allow large corporations to further dictate the supply levels and price to exploit farmers.

Bring attention to India’s history of human rights abuses. This has been a peaceful demonstration but that hasn’t stopped the government from tear gassing and water cannoning protesters.

Thank you,

Solidarity with Indian Farmers
