This webinar will do a deep dive into some of the best research of the last 20 years, looking at the formidable barriers faced by those fighting for a fair electoral system. Warning: It’s longer than our usual webinar presentations, because it’s the first time we’ve offered this and there is a lot to cover!

For the second half of the webinar—the question and answers and discussion—we’ll be joined by Professor Emeritus Lawrence LeDuc.

Professor Leduc is a leading Canadian expert on referendums, with a special emphasis on electoral reform, who will provide valuable insight based on his decades of work on this topic.

Note: This webinar is the first of a two-part series. Watch your email this winter for a new webinar on the inspiring and transformative power of Citizens’ Assemblies!

Electoral Reform is Gaining Momentum!

Check out this article in the December 2 Hill Times, the newspaper read by MPs and those with power in Ottawa:

Author Megan Mattes is absolutely right - it’s time to turn up the heat! With an election possible within months, there’s no time to waste.

The tide is starting to turn for electoral reform, as prominent Canadians from across the political spectrum speak up about our broken electoral system.

A couple of weeks ago, Lloyd Axworthy, the Chair of the World Refugee Council, Companion to the Order of Canada, and a former Liberal Cabinet Minister, wrote a piece in the Globe and Mail calling for the government to get back to work on Electoral Reform!

He’s joined other notable Canadians with an endorsement of a National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform!

Almost exactly 20 years ago, the founding of Fair Vote Canada got a kick-start with a piece in the Globe and Mail co-authored by Judy Rebick (an activist on the left and the founder of rabble.ca) and Walter Robinson (on the right - then the President of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation). On November 29, 2000, they wrote:

“As two individuals from opposite ends of the political spectrum who disagree on most issues, we wholeheartedly agree on one thing: changing our electoral system to better represent the wishes of voters is an urgent necessity."

Last week we heard from Walter Robinson again about the urgent need to reform our voting system, and his commitment to support the call for a National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform:

The voices of citizens are growing louder. Thanks to you, an astonishing 7500 holiday cards are heading to Justin Trudeau calling for a National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform!

On December 12, our social media day of action, we’ll be sharing photos of PR supporters across Canada with cards for Trudeau! You can follow the action at #MakeYourVoiceHeard.

We’ll also be sharing short videos from three MPs from three different parties!

The success of our social media day depends on supporters. If you can help and have 10 minutes to host a local Zoom meeting to take a group photo like the one above before December 12, sign up here

We know a strong recovery from COVID-19 depends on a democracy that’s up for the challenge. This minority government is our chance - let’s seize the moment.

All the best to you and your family this holiday season,

Anita Nickerson
Executive Director, Fair Vote Canada
