During the recent BC provincial election campaign period there was renewed attention on the Site C mega dam construction project and its continued scandals. From violations of Indigenous rights, cover-ups of critical geological findings, billion-dollar cost overruns, and the destruction of rare prime agricultural land – there are so many reasons this project is a growing catastrophe for environment and people of British Columbia.
Now that the election is over, we can't afford to lose and waste time to fight back against Site C mega dam construction. Join Climate Convergence for the coming webinar to discuss these issues in more depth, and especially how we can move forward together and demand that the newly elected NDP majority BC government cancel this disastrous project once and for all!
SPEAKERS
WENDY HOLM: Award winning Agrologist who was one of the people responsible for evaluating the agricultural impact of assessment of the Site C dam. Wendy Holm appeared as an expert witness before the Joint Federal Provincial Environmental Impact Assessment Review Panel and is also the editor of “Damming the Peace - The Hidden Costs of the Site C Dam” (Lorimer, 2018).
KEN BOONE: Ken and his wife Arlene live and farm at Bear Flat in the Peace River Valley between Hudson’s Hope and Fort St John. They have been deeply involved in the fight to stop the Site C dam for many years and are both directors with the Peace Valley Environment Association. While most of their land has been expropriated for the project, for now they remain living in the old house that Arlene’s grandfather built.
RITA WONG: Rita Wong is a volunteer with FightC, a grassroots group which seeks to protect the Peace Valley from being destroyed by the Site C dam. For the past 5 years, she has been actively opposed to the Site C dam, and has written about her visits to Treaty 8 territory, the homelands of the DunneZa and Cree people in Rabble and the National Observer. She is a poet-scholar whose work is guided by what water teaches us. She has written a number of books of poetry, co-edited the anthology Downstream: Reimagining Water with Dorothy Christan, and teaches at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Rita also spent time in the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women due to her opposition to TMX pipeline expansion. She is grateful to live on unceded Coast Salish lands and for the opportunity to learn to uphold Coast Salish laws and also to remind the BC government of its treaty responsibilities as well.
