When the drinking waters of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe were threatened in 2016 by construction of the Dakota Access pipeline, “Water is life”, Mní Wičóni in the Lakota Indigenous language, became a rallying call of the struggle. Since then, it has continued to guide the work of people fighting around the world against the climate crisis and in protection of the vital water systems upon which all life depends.
Join this webinar to hear important updates about the world-wide struggle in defence of water from organizers and land defenders on the frontlines from Canada, Hawai’i and Brazil and to discuss our tasks and perspectives for building a united and stronger climate justice movement!
FEATURED SPEAKERS:
DALILA CALISTO - Member of the National Coordination of the Movimento dos Atingidos por Barragens - MAB (Movement of People Affected by Dams) in Brazil. The MAB is leading the struggle in the Brazilian community of Aurizona against water pollution caused by Equinox Gold, a Canadian mining company.
LAULANI TEALE - A Native Hawaiian musician, and a front-line ki'ai (protector) of Hawaiian sacred sites such as Mauna Kea. She is Coordinator of Hoʻopae Peace Project. She was recently involved in leading the struggle against the RIMPAC war games which take place annually in Hawai’i.
MARYAM ADRANGI – Long-time supporter and organizer working together with the Grassy Narrows First Nation in their struggle for justice in the face of wide-spread mercury poisoning of their waters and lands for more than 60 years. The Grassy Narrows First Nation, Asabiinyashkosiwagong Nitam-Anishinaabeg in the Ojibwe language, is located in Ontario, Canada.
DR KATE TAIRYAN – Senior lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Programs for Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. She is an organizer with Protect the Planet, Stop TMX! who has been monitoring and reporting on the destruction of vital salmon habitat by the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline (TMX) project near her home in Hope, British Columbia, Canada.
