DESCRIPTION

Speaker: Dr. William Carroll

Title: Emitters, Enablers, Apologists and Critics: Fossil capital, its allies and adversaries

Abstract: Fossil capital – commodified energy from extracted carbon – has been the basis for capitalism’s rise as a globalized way of life, now threatening the health of the Earth’s living systems. In the same era that climate crisis has become increasingly palpable, the emergence of ‘communicative capitalism’ has offered new means of persuasion to fossil capital and its allies, but also its critics. In this lecture I survey the contemporary situation in Canada with an eye toward prospects for a transition to energy democracy.

Reception following in Teck Gallery.
