April 15, 2019 at 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM

Hamilton @ West Georgia (Vancouver)

Extinction Rebellion is a global network of concerned citizens taking non-violent, direct action against the climate crisis. Our first demand: "The Government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency, reverse inconsistent policies and work alongside the media to communicate with citizens."

On April 1st, ‘Canada’s Changing Climate Report 2019’ was leaked, announcing a shocking revelation that this country is warming at TWICE the rate of the rest of the world. Despite the obviously urgent nature of this gov’t report, the story was first reported in the ‘Science and Technology’ section of the CBC and then buried after 24 hours.

For far too long, the CBC has either ignored or downplayed the climate emergency. Let's reclaim our CBC to demand that they tell the truth about the climate crisis and ecological collapse.

***This will be a NON-VIOLENT, PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION in line with the Extinction Rebellion ethos ***

Did you know that the the city of Vancouver, directed by OneCityVancouver, declared a “climate emergency” in January 2019? We need to know CBC coverage will go beyond simply reporting announcements and that they will take the lead on addressing climate change and ecological collapse as the emergency that it is.

Our demands are as follows >>>

1. The CBC British Columbia Programming Director Shiral Tobin agree to a meeting with a delegation from Extinction Rebellion to discuss how the corporation can meet its crucial moral duty to tell the full truth on the climate and ecological emergency.

2. The CBC declare a climate and ecological emergency - we need to act now, the extinction of the natural world is happening and we face the collapse of our civilizations.

3. The CBC place the climate and ecological emergency as its top editorial and corporate priority - integrated into all of aspects of the CBC’s output, not just in technology & science and opinion sections - by adoption of a climate emergency strategic plan.

4. The CBC prioritize covering stories that reflect how unmitigated resource development threatens and continually undermines Indigenous sovereignty.

5. The CBC, its subsidiaries and its supply chain to agree to be zero-carbon by 2025.

6. The CBC to take a lead on encouraging other national & global media corporations to join the global efforts to save humanity / nature from existential crises.

7. The CBC to only allow think-tank spokespersons or lobbyists on-air to discuss the climate and ecological emergency whose funding is fully transparent.
