WHERE: Whey-ah-Wichen (Cates Park), North Vancouver (exact meeting point to be confirmed - stay tuned!)
This Mother's Day, on Sunday May 14th, Coast Salish First Nations and Pacific Climate Warriors will be holding a joint water ceremony to connect their fight to stop fossil fuel expansion and protect Mother Earth. The Tsleil-Waututh Nation is filling ceremonial canoes with community members, leaders and friends, with a single spot reserved for Justin Trudeau. This event is ceremonial in nature and we ask for all those who would like to show solidarity to do so in a respectful manner. Please leave signs and banners at home.
On the shore: You may join on the shore to respectfully witness the ceremony and gather for the send-off of the canoes.
On the water: Experienced kayaks who wish to join on the water are welcome to do so in a silent and respectful manner. There will be no gear or safety equipment provided by organizers so people are solely responsible for their own logistics and safety. Please refrain from bringing signs and banners in order to respect the ceremony. More details TBC on participation - stay tuned!
This May, Pacific Climate Warriors are travelling from the Pacific to Canada for a tour of the Alberta tar sands and are heading to Vancouver for ceremony and speaking events to join Indigenous communities opposed to the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Justin Trudeau's broken promises and recently approved pipelines like Kinder Morgan would unleash catastrophic climate change -- for Pacific Islanders this means rising sea levels that are directly threatening their homes, communities, and cultures.
