The Surveillance of Anarchists and the Criminalization of Dissent in Canada and the US

Sunday, September 13, 2015 - 16:00

This workshop will explore the development of the surveillance of the anarchist movements in Canada and the US, as well as the broader issue of the criminaliza on of dissent. Specifically, this includes cases of state sponsored monitoring, infiltra on and disruption of anarchist projects and ac vi es. I will first discuss the climate of criminalizing protests and free speech, highlighting the problematic nature of current Canadian legislation which poses multiple threats to the privacy and the rights of activists and of the general public. I will then outline the network of state surveillance of the anarchist and ac vist community in Canada, starting in Victoria, and then look elsewhere in Canada and in the US, such as during the 2010 Toronto G20 protests, the 2010 Vancouver anti-Olympics Games protests, and the US green scare.
