Vancouver Calls on CBC to Change the Debate

Tomorrow at 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM

CBC Vancouver

700 Hamilton Street, Vancouver, British Columbia

Hosted by Our Time - Vancouver

Join us and thousands of people across the country to demand that the CBC host a federal leaders’ debate on climate change and a Green New Deal during the October election.

As our public broadcaster, the CBC has a moral obligation to make sure that every single person in Canada knows which of our leaders have a real plan to tackle the climate crisis.

Here's our plan:
We’re in a climate emergency. Fires, floods, and rising temperatures are already ravaging our communities. The government we elect in the 2019 election will lead us through four of the 11 remaining years scientists have given us to act on climate. This is an opportunity that we may never see again and one this movement can’t afford to miss. Over 11 million people tune in to watch federal leaders’ debates during Canadian elections — and every one of them deserves to know which of our politicians has a real plan to tackle the biggest crisis of our time.

As our public broadcaster, funded by public money, the CBC has both the power to organize a federal leaders’ debate and a responsibility to listen to the people. If enough of us take action on July 17th, we can push the CBC to host a leaders’ debate on climate change.

We have to act now as CBC officials finalize their plans for their elections coverage. That’s why, on July 17th, we will gather outside of the CBC studio, during the six o’clock news, to send a clear message: Canada needs a federal leaders’ debate on climate change and a Green New Deal.

Accessibility Info: This action will take place outdoors, and we unfortunately cannot control for fragrances. The plaza is wheelchair-accessible with outdoor seating. There are coffee shops and a library nearby with washrooms.

We acknowledge that Our Time - Vancouver organizes on the unceded, traditional, ancestral and occupied homelands of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples. For those who are non-Indigenous, our presence on these lands is an ongoing act of colonization. When we acknowledge these territories, we renew our responsibility to centre and uphold Indigenous sovereignty in all our organizing.
