We're launching the People's Injunction to stop the broken pipeline review process.

Friends,

Last weekend, Canada signed onto a global climate agreement that ushered in a new chapter for this global movement. We are at a potential turning point away from fossil fuels -- but only if Canada keeps its promises, increases ambition, and comes up with a plan to keep fossil fuels, starting with the tar sands, in the ground.

Unfortunately, right now Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is on track to break his first big climate promise. The Prime Minister intends to allow National Energy Board reviews of the Energy East and Kinder Morgan Trans-Mountain pipelines to continue, despite the fact that these review processes are broken.

The Prime Minister promised to overhaul these National Energy Board reviews to consider climate change and respect communities. Since he's not following through, we're announcing a new plan today:

We're launching the People's Injunction to stop the broken pipeline review process.

The plan is straight-forward. If the NEB reviews of the Energy East and Kinder Morgan Trans-Mountain pipelines are not cancelled or suspended by January 15th, people and groups across Canada will take action to hold the Prime Minister and this government accountable to their own election promises.

We will not stand by and watch the rubber-stamping of tar sands pipelines under this broken and illegitimate review process.

During the election campaign, this government committed to overhaul the NEB and restore Canada’s environmental protections. They promised that pipeline reviews would include a "climate test" that considered the emissions facilitated by pipelines. The Prime Minister said that “while governments can grant permits, people give permission” and promised to listen to communities, especially First Nations, before supporting new pipelines.

Now, the Prime Minister and his cabinet have changed their tune and pledged to continue the same reviews they campaigned against -- reviews using the rules laid out by Stephen Harper when he gutted Canada’s environmental protection regime.

Canada needs to lead with actions, not just words, and that starts with a government that keeps its promises on climate change.

P.S. Yesterday, we made another big announcement that we think you should know about. Alongside partners in 12 countries, we kicked off something called Break Free from Fossil Fuels -- a moment of global escalation against the fossil fuel industry from May 7 to 15, 2016. Click here to find out more about that plan and to sign up to be the first to know how to plug into planning in Canada.
