The RCMP now has the authority--under the
City of Burnaby's injunction--to dismantle Camp Cloud. A
press release issued by the city on Friday says, "The timeline for dismantling the camp will be determined, in consultation with the RCMP." The city requests that "the occupants of Camp Cloud and everyone concerned to help ensure the safe, respectful and peaceful dismantling of the camp," but it's the state and the police that are the greatest violent threat. History has shown us that the RCMP will not always treat people of colour and our indigenous sisters and brothers peacefully and with respect.
Burnaby Now editor Chris Campbell asks the question "
when will Burnaby evict Camp Cloud and who gets to watch?" Campbell warns the city against raiding the camp in the dark of night, in an attempt to hide from the news media and other witnesses who might want to hold the city accountable.
Camp Cloud does not want a confrontation with the City of Burnaby or RCMP, but residents also do not want to relinquish the camp and believe they have the right to stay and continue opposing the pipeline expansion project.
Camp Cloud is asking for support and to come "with your Love!"
Without any idea when the city and police will act on the injunction--knowing an eviction could happen at any time--consider going by Camp Cloud this week to show your support. We must also try to bear witness to any eviction or "dismantling" process in case the police are violent, property is destroyed, or residents are arrested.
We're all united in the fight to stop the pipeline expansion project! Let's show support for Camp Cloud!
