Forest activists in Victoria, B.C.—under the banner Save Old Growth—shut down the Trans-Canada Highway, while Extinction Rebellion sealed the route in Nanaimo and highway off-ramps in Vancouver. Emergency vehicles were permitted to pass—so was a driver delivering life-saving medicine. Tempers flared, a driver raced toward oncoming traffic, and a dozen activists were arrested. Undaunted, Save the Old Growth and Extinction Rebellion both vowed to keep shutting down the Trans-Canada until the B.C. and federal governments take serious action to stop cutting the last of the province’s ancient trees.
