(Coast Salish Territory/ Vancouver, B.C.- April 6, 2018): As Justin Trudeau prepares to tour the tar sands in Fort McMurray and meet with oil executives this morning, Indigenous leaders in B.C. are committing to ongoing action against Kinder Morgan’s tar sands pipeline and tanker project.
The Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) represents more than half of the 203 First Nations in British Columbia. Tomorrow, UBCIC’s full political Executive will take action unprecedented in the 49 years the organization has been fighting for justice for Indigenous people. Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, President (Penticton Indian Band), Chief Bob Chamberlin, Vice-President (Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis First Nation) and Chief Judy Wilson, Secretary-Treasurer (Neskonlith Indian Band) will march with supporters to the gates of Kinder Morgan’s construction site. There, the UBCIC Executive will fulfill their pledge to do ‘whatever it takes’ to protect Indigenous rights, lands and waters from the pipeline that Justin Trudeau approved. Their supporters on April 7 will include Naomi Klein.
Saturday’s action is part of escalating Indigenous-led opposition to the tar sands pipeline. More than 170 people have been arrested supporting this opposition since March 10th, when an estimated 10,000 people made international headlines marching with Indigenous leaders against the pipeline.
