A trial of three employees of the bankrupt Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway (MMA) had a brief opening session in Lac Mégantic, Quebec, May 13. They are charged with criminal negligence in the oil train crash and conflagration on July 6, 2013, that killed 47 people and destroyed the center of the town. The three - engineer Thomas Harding, manager of operations Jean Demaître, and traffic controller Richard Labrie - were formally charged and then released on bail. Their next court appearance is September 11.

On Saturday, April 12, a number of VESG members participated in the walk, rally and flotilla opposed to Kinder Morgan’s plans to expand the Trans Mountain pipeline carrying tar sands bitumen to the Burrard Inlet. The day was organized by the Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Pipeline Expansion (BROKE) and North Shore NOPE. Below is a collection of news stories related to the event.

The September 23, 2013 inaugural events in Burnaby, Vancouver and Victoria of the Vancouver Ecosocialist Group were a great success! A full capacity - 200 person crowd in Vancouver came to hear Jane Sterk (outgoing leader of the British Columbia Green Party) and Fred Magdoff (Professor Emeritus in Plant and Soil Science and co-author of "What Every Environmentalist Needs to Know About Capitalism").
