John Horgan’s NDP government ignored basic truths and now commits BC to greater environmental disaster.

The astoundingly stupid approval of Site C, an over-budget mega-project with no demonstrable need and plenty of cheaper alternatives, marks a black day for B.C.’s NDP government.

Oil Change International

We can hardly believe we’re even writing this, but today marks one of the biggest wins in Oil Change International’s history: The World Bank announced it will end all financing of oil and gas extraction after 2019.

Some of us at Oil Change International have been campaigning against the Bank for multiple decades, and this has been a core demand for all of those years. Today, we won.

If we don't win very quickly on climate change, then we will never win. That's the core truth about global warming. It's what makes it different from every other problem our political systems have faced. I wrote the first book for a general audience about climate change in 1989 – back when one had to search for examples to help people understand what the "greenhouse effect" would feel like. We knew it was coming, but not how fast or how hard.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee says he admires two Canadian provinces that are partnering with California to reduce their carbon footprint. But he's seriously concerned about a big fossil fuel project that's been approved to go through another province next door to his own state.

Just transition in South Africa

The global economy is facing numerous structural challenges. With the looming fourth economic revolution characterized by even more technological development and mechanization, the future of productive labour is bleak. Most unskilled and semi-skilled workers are likely to lose their jobs. Even some skilled workers are not spared from this emerging catastrophe, as numerous job categories – such as brick-layers – are increasingly becoming redundant.

Over 15,000 scientists signed an open letter published in BioScience warning humanity that we need to change our behaviours in order to protect the planet. (NOAA)

A similar warning was first issued by scientists in 1992

Nov 13, 2017

More than 15,000 scientists around the world have issued a global warning: there needs to be change in order to save Earth.

It comes 25 years after the first notice in 1992 when a mere 1,500 scientists issued a similar warning.

This new cautioning — which gained popularity on Twitter with #ScientistsWarningToHumanity — garnered more than 15,000 signatures.
