If nothing else, nine days in the North Fraser Pretrial Centre taught me quite a few valuable (and in some cases, unexpected) lessons about the realities of short term incarceration in Canada’s prison system.  These included the realization that while extremely unpleasant, a short-term internment is not necessarily an awful experience, depending on how you approach it, and that you may encounter significantly more kindness and humanity from fellow inmates than you might otherwise expect.

While many Canadians are looking to the October 21st federal election for solutions to global climate disruption, the climate plans from the four major parties offer none.

Any genuine solution will require reining in an economic system that demands eternal growth in a finite ecosystem, mitigating or adapting to multiplying environmental and social disasters, and drastically reducing consumption. Deadline: yesterday!

Activists plan to release drones near the airport. Their possible arrest is a small price to pay for fighting the climate crisis

Obedience is dangerous. It has facilitated every form of institutional oppression and violence. Every advance in justice, peace and democracy has been made possible by disobedience. Ethical progress is unlikely when we do only what we are told.

The corporation linked to the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project demanded a group of teenagers cover their legal bills — before promptly changing its mind without explanation.

Youth Stop TMX, a group made up of Olivier Adkin-Kaya, 18; Lena Andres, 17; Nina Tran, 18; and Rebecca Wolf Gage, 13, had applied for judicial review of the pipeline project, arguing that it violates their inherent rights to life, liberty, security of person and equality.

If this was a game of hockey, we’d be down to an overtime shootout.

A federal judge has Zambonied a narrow strip of ice for the players to skate on, and six Indigenous legal teams will get to take a shot.

It’s time for the home crowd to stand up and root for them. Please join me in making a donation to the First Nations challenging this toxic, dangerous oil tanker expansion on behalf of all of us.

[ Editor: Common Dreams reported yesterday that the Washington State Supreme Court has ruled that environmental defenders have the right to employ a defence of necessity when being tried for climate-related offences.  This decision follows a similar one from the Minnesota State Supreme Court.

To date this defence has not been allowed in Canada. Will Offley]

The court's decision, explained one attorney, "creates a strong legal basis for climate protesters to justify their actions in a court of law."
