New provincial funding announced

New Democrat MLAs Aman Singh and Jennifer Whiteside are welcoming the announcement of $22,000 in funding to support the planning and development of an emergency evacuation route for the city.

If passed, the new bill would ensure rent can only be increased at the rate of inflation, and landlords would have to apply to the Residential Tenancy Branch before they can issue an eviction notice relating to renovations.

The B.C. government has proposed a law that would extend the rent freeze to the end of 2021, cap future rent increases to inflation and prevent illegal renovictions.

Global calls for defunding the police have made their way to New Westminster.

At a budget workshop on Monday afternoon, council considered draft capital and operating budgets, which proposed a 4.9% property tax increase in 2021. But instead of directing the finance department to prepare a financial plan that incorporated that increase, council voted four to three in support of Coun. Nadine Nakagawa’s motion to send the police budget back to the police board and ask it to submit a budget with a 0% increase for 2021.
