On Saturday, April 12, a number of VESG members participated in the walk, rally and flotilla opposed to Kinder Morgan’s plans to expand the Trans Mountain pipeline carrying tar sands bitumen to the Burrard Inlet. The day was organized by the Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Pipeline Expansion (BROKE) and North Shore NOPE. Below is a collection of news stories related to the event.

Chrysler Corporation announced last month that it plans to invest $3.5 billion to retool its assembly plants in Windsor and Brampton, Ontario and produce new lines of vehicles. But it set two big conditions—that the federal and Ontario governments provide $700 million in subsidies, and that the union of assembly line employees, Unifor, accept wage concessions, notably lower salaries for new hires. Unifor and the two levels of government agreed to the subsidy demand. We believe this a wrong choice for society, including for autoworkers.

This week is the big, annual fund drive by the food banks in BC to raise money for their operations. CBC Radio One is devoting its local programming on Dec. 6 to its annual fund drive for them. Food banks began in the province 31 years ago and were supposed to be an “emergency” response to food needs at the time. After all these years of a “temporary” measure, they are still going strong!
