Climate change denier promises to bring in new era for coal, pull U.S. out of international climate commitments

Hours after the stunning U.S. presidential election returns showed an avowed climate change denier chosen for the nation's highest office, environmentalists around the world grappled with what a Donald Trump presidency will mean for the planet.

A new U.S. coal producer has struck a deal to ship thermal coal by rail through Metro Vancouver.

Lighthouse Resources, the operator of mines in Wyoming and Montana, said it has begun shipments of coal out of Westshore Terminals in Delta to power plants in South Korea after abandoning its push to build a new export terminal in Oregon, where it faced strong opposition.

It’s a simple choice: stop all fossil fuel prospecting, or break the Paris agreement on climate change.

Do they understand what they have signed? Plainly they do not. Governments like ours, now ratifying the Paris agreement on climate change, haven’t the faintest idea what it means. Either that, or they have no intention of honouring it.

Peabody Energy, the largest coal producer in the U.S., funded dozens of groups spreading skepticism about climate change, according to new figures that reportedly surprised even environmental advocates with their scale.

Wind and solar have grown seemingly unstoppable.

While two years of crashing prices for oil, natural gas, and coal triggered dramatic downsizing in those industries, renewables have been thriving. Clean energy investment broke new records in 2015 and is now seeing twice as much global funding as fossil fuels.
