Canada’s financial heavyweights are trying to convince the federal government to let them keep pumping money into the oil and gas sector, using loopholes unsupported by climate science, confidential documents obtained by Canada’s National Observer reveal.

The Sustainable Finance Action Council (SFAC), whose members include representatives from Canada’s major banks, insurance companies and pension plans, was set up in 2021 to advise Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on how to best build a sustainable finance market.

A Canadian mining company wants to open the largest open-pit gold mine in Brazil's history in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

However, Indigenous rights and environmental advocates are targeting the company's shareholders to stop it, saying Toronto-headquartered Belo Sun has made “misleading” claims to investors about its Volta Grande project.

As first incarnated by Tesla, the EV is increasingly seen as sleeker, slicker, faster and more stylish than traditional internal combustion engine cars and trucks that burn those dirty fossil fuels blamed for disrupting weather patterns and killing off species.
