Everyone conscious of the problem of global warming understands that we must have fewer private cars on our streets. By lowering the cost of public transit (and ultimately to make it free) and increasing its accessibility, more riders will be attracted to it. Why can’t we have more buses and trains coming to more stops in neighbourhoods? Why can’t we make transit more affordable for people of lower income? Providing more public transit for less would be a step toward climate rationality and justice.

Fight the Fire - Book Cover

Ecosocialism in the age of climate change needs to stop being a niche, an abstract ideological program, and turn into a concrete, practical, non-dogmatic plan for the future.

We need to make some serious changes in the ecosocialist project.

It’s good that we have the idea of ecosocialism. Because the words stand for a basic idea that ecology and socialism go together. Linked, they are the hope of the world.

Ecosocialist responses to “degrowth” analysis and proposals have ranged from full support to total rejection. The author of the following critical commentary is an emeritus professor of biology at Howard University, and co-author of The Earth is Not for Sale (World Scientific, 2019). We encourage respectful responses in the comments, and hope to publish other views in future.

Though the text being reviewed here is being negatively evaluated, I find it useful to see the list of categories being used by the reviewers. Not being much of a consumer of theoretical and scholastic writings, I had no such list before reading this. Perhaps others might find this useful.                    Gene McGuckin

As current, former and never members of the NDP, the Vancouver Ecosocialist Group [VESG] congratulates you for your recent efforts to make the NDP a vehicle to struggle against the crisis of the earth system. Not only did you demonstrate that a movement is essential if we are to stop the madness of business and growth as usual, but you exposed dramatically how distant the NDP leadership is from acting with the speed and scale necessary today.

Twitter from Jeremy Corbyn:

Thanks to everyone who has written in support of my @guardian piece urging radical change. I must make one correction: it’s not about Corbynism. It’s about socialism. The fight for a kinder society is a collective struggle: we owe it to each other to win.
